Buckeyes' Smith leads Walter Camp Award finalists

How much hardware will this fellow pull in this year? I remember the suspension at the beginning of his junior year. Contrast this with Maurice Clarrett and you see two opposite ends of the spectrum.

Smith one of five Walter Camp Award finalists

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith is the clear-cut favorite to win the Heisman Trophy. He figures to collect additional hardware before then.

Smith on Wednesday was named one of five finalists for the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award.

Arkansas running back Darren McFadden, Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn, West Virginia running back Steve Slaton and Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan were also were named finalists Wednesday.

The winner will be announced Dec. 7 and receive the trophy at the Walter Camp Football Foundation's annual awards banquet Jan. 13.

The 2006 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and leader of the top-ranked Buckeyes, Smith threw for 2,507 yards with 30 touchdowns and just five interceptions. His most recent effort, a 316-yard, four TD performance against rival Michigan, clinched Ohio State's spot in the BCS national title game Jan. 8.
